The Container Garden Special

This week we take you live to our back porch. In this picture you can see our yellow zucchini in the far left container, green peppers and celosia (cockscomb) in the middle, and cilantro and crockneck squash in the right container. They all love the nightly thunderstorms and daily highs above 80° that we have been having. We love this weather too because that means that we don't have to water them. Click on the garden to see other plants that we're experimenting with. We regret to inform you that our swiss chard is in the PICU (Plant Intensive Care Unit), thus not pictured. We haven't had to hook them up to CO2 or a fertilizer IV yet, but they are in critical condition. We are hoping for the best.
Helen is developing by leaps and bounds. This week she helped Ryan bring the laundry up, maybe next week she will help me fold it.

Your zucchini is going to out grow that wee pot. They spread out and become a real pain to move when they fruit.

I've been container gardening on my patio for 3 years now. I have a lemon tree this year. I have to move my plants off the patio to get sufficient sun and to avoid the baking Houston heat on cement. It dries your plants out and prevents the setting of certain fruits.

Fun fun. I wish I had a real in the ground garden though.

I'm so sorry about the swiss chard. Perhaps we were a little too ambitious, especially with the big thunderstorm that night that they were transplanted. Oops. I'm glad that Helen has decided to start helping around the house. She's so cute!

Yes, we have the same fears about the zucchini that you have, Ben, but we picked some interesting varieties in hopes of minimizing the sprawl. In the circle pot we planted a variety called "Burpee's Golden Zucchini" which supposedly grows so that all the fruits come right off the main middle stem instead of along the vine. The other pot has "Early Golden Crookneck" and we figure that we can lay one vine along the ground be the pots and the other up on the railing of our deck.
